Preventative drink and drug driving for all people who drink alcohol (at any time) and who drive a car
“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
Walt Disney
Rationale – Why does this matter?
According to Visser’s (International Transport Forum, ITF, 2017), approximately 273,000 worldwide deaths occur yearly due to drink driving. As a weighted measure of all traffic-related deaths, this accounts for 21.8%. They also argue that this figure is likely to underestimate the problem due to underreporting in official statistics. Similar findings have also been provided by the World Health Organisation Global Status Report (WHO, 2018), which reported that between 5 – 35% of all worldwide road deaths were alcohol-related.
According to the United Kingdom Department for Transport (2023), road traffic statistics, there were 260 deaths and 1860 people injured in 2021 due to drink driving, almost half the recorded number in 2010. However, this risk-taking behaviour continues to have clear implications for causing risk of harm to self and others. Due to the legal, financial and reputational risks of this offence we have strived to find a solution to halt the inevitable.
The Solution
Our preventative drink and drug driving intervention is grounded in psychological doctorate research. It has been tested with real participants, demonstrating measurable impact on:
- Knowledge about legalities of drink and drug driving
- Attitudes towards drink or drug driving
- Intentions to offend
- Knowledge and informed decision making
It is short, accessible and interactive so there is an expectation that learners will engage and reflect on their behaviour.
Outcomes and Benefits
- For individuals there is a higher awareness of risks, confidence to make informed decisions and lasting behaviour and attitudinal change.
- For organisations they provide a safer workforce, reduced liability and reputation risk and you have evidence of being a proactive in prevention. This meets both risk management and compliance expectations.
- Financially you could save through staff retention and avoid further recruitment and onboarding by having staff team who can make informed decisions about driving legally and safely. Ultimately, you prevent one of your team from gaining a conviction, loss of license and all the other consequences that offence accrues.
